Advice on Handling Redundancy
The aim of this guide below is to provide guidance for employers, trade unions and employee representatives on the best way to handle redundancies.
Workplace policies
Clear workplace policies and procedures help organisations to be productive, efficient and maintain high levels of staff morale. Ensuring that everyone knows how and why things are done is a key component in establishing best employment practice. Check out our free 'Employment Document Toolkit' to create your own policies and procedures that adhere to legal requirements and best practice, and which meet the particular needs of your organisation.

Contractor versus Employee versus Worker
Employees, workers and contractors have different rights and responsibilities.
Arbitration services
Those who have submitted a tribunal claim will also be offered access to the Labour Relations Agency’s Arbitration Scheme which offers a quick, non–legalistic, less formal, confidential and more cost effective alternative to a tribunal hearing.
Advice on Managing Difficult Conversations
The ability to be able to talk about very sensitive and emotive issues is an integral part of effective line management and can be critical to managing performance, promoting attendance and improving team dynamics. These difficult conversations should not be avoided.
Contracts of employment
Employers must provide a contract of employment which sets out the terms and conditions of employment.
Interviews
When replies to the job advertisement have been received, it is appropriate to:
• match applications against the job description and person specification;
• eliminate applicants who do not have the basic requirements for the job; and
• draw up a shortlist of candidates for interview.
Video Guide to the Employment Tribunal Process
Law Centre NI has launched a new video guide to the Employment Tribunal process, which will help people to understand what they should expect when submitting a claim to the Tribunal.
Available in English, Hungarian, Lithuanian and Polish, the Guide is split into two chapters so that people can learn about the steps that they will go through before a Hearing takes place, as well as what happens on the day of the Hearing.
