Welcome to the first joint newsletter publication between the Labour Relations Agency and the Equality Commission on developments in employment and equality law. This is the first pilot newsletter between the two organisations and we hope that all of our website visitors find it useful.
Mediation Explained
Mediation works by using a neutral Labour Relations Agency mediator to assist parties involved in a workplace conflict or dispute to reach a satisfactory solution to workplace disputes that both sides are able to agree to.
Collective Conciliation Explained
Collective Conciliation is facilitated or assisted negotiation where an Agency conciliator helps employers and employees (normally via trade unions) to try to reach mutually acceptable settlements of their collective disputes.
Advice on Handling Discipline and Grievances at Work
This guide is purely advisory. It complements the Agency’s Code by giving more practical advice and guidance that employers and employees and their representatives will often find helpful both in general terms and in respect of individual cases.

Under Article 54A of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995, the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland may prepare and issue codes of practice giving practical guidance: to - employers, service providers; to - promote equality of opportunity, encourage good practice in the field of employment and in access to goods, facilities services and premises. No.290 The Industrial Court (Proceedings) Rules (Northern Ireland) 2007
These rules allow for any party to be represented by counsel or solicitor in proceedings before the Industrial Court arising from the legislative provisions listed in the Schedule, that is: the ICE Regulations 2005, the Transnational ICE Regulations 1999, the European Public Limited Liability Company Regulations 2004, and the European Cooperative Society (Involvement of Employees) Regulations 2006.
