An apprentice is someone who is engaged through an employment contract to undertake a course of training and learning in order to practice a skilled trade or profession.
Maternity, Paternity and Parental leave
Pregnant employees are entitled to up to one year’s maternity leave. Paternity leave is available if certain criteria are met. Parents are also entitled to 18 weeks’ unpaid leave for each child up to their 18th birthday.

Rests and breaks
Employees are entitled to breaks for meals and to rest. As far as possible employers should provide breaks, facilities and comfortable surroundings for additional needs such as breastfeeding or expressing milk.

These Regulations come into force on 18 June 2016 and extend to Northern Ireland only.

The Labour Relations Agency provides an Early Conciliation service following a change in NI employment law which took effect on 27 January 2020. This service helps to resolve workplace disputes in a legally binding way, without the need to take a case to the Industrial or Fair Employment Tribunal. This Order comes into operation on 22/3/15 and essentially it revises the limits on awards and payments under certain employment rights legislation in line with the rate of inflation.

This Order comes into operation on 1/8/14 and amends the Rehabilitation of Offenders (Exceptions) Order 1979.
